Rutgers Notes...

Wow - this is not just like old times. As an undergrad during the Burns/Anderson era , we never saw the level of football excitement we're seeing this week. We also did not see so many tall buildings and fancy coffee shops on the banks. What we DID see was this:

Greasy Tony's was a New Brunswick institution, known for it's architecture (used to be a Carrol's hamburger stand, as was the Grande Pizzarama on 18 South, near the Drive-In, but I digress), late night hours and wide ranging menu, all of it greasy and good. Most of that block was demolished a number of years back to build a great big building for the university - nothing to compare to Greasy Tony's has been seen in the Hub City, since.

Tony relocated to Arizona.

By the way, the building next door to GT's, the Brunswick Pub, was owned by the brother of the owner of the North Brunswick Pub, and was the first local place I got served. In case you were wondering.

The Greasy Tony's picture above was forwarded to me a number of years back...I think they came from Dave? New Brunswick Greasy Tony Pics are hard to come by, though I found these two after a short search:

I am surprised by the ground-swell produced by the last football game. Traffic reports included RU Football traffic for the first time ever. I could care less after 57 other good sports were cut in a political maneuver to funnel more cash into "Paper Hat Studies" and such nonsense. Then RU has the nerve to hire freshman saps at $2.50 an hour to call me asking for finacial support? What they should have done is asked alumni to support these other sports. And of course, cut the Paper Hat studies. But this is New Jersey, where the politicians need to muck everything up, including the f-ing name of the school. How many more no-show jobs does Rutgers give to the Trenton Mobsters?

Though Tony's was sorely missed, to say there was nothing remotely like it in the interveining years is incorrect. You obviously don't remember The Steak-Out on French St & New St. -- a place where many school boy sissies feared to tread ("Woah, brown people! Too dangerous for me!").

And the institution next door was the Brunswick Pub, not the New Brunswick Pub. I should know, I used to work there.

Enjoy your Rutgers memories before it's turned into a combination Communist re-education camp/mosque.

Ralph,

Thanks for stopping by - You are right on about the BP - I'm fixing it in the post. I grew up in North Brunswick and our crew called it the "New" Brunswick Pub as a longhand way of distinguishing it from his brothers place. The BP was a fun place, pool in the back, mostly locals, and you could still walk up to campus hangouts if you wanted.

The Steak-Out - I remember it well. Used to drop by there after nights out at Melody and Roxy (was it still the Roxy? did it ever change?...memories fading....)after graduation, early 90s. I think the food at the Steak-out was quite a bit better than GTs, but as far as decor, spirit, location (near so many bars!), and the freaky goings -on, Tony's was a special place. ASIDE - As far as fine dining is concerned, I was then, and remain, partial to HPs White Rose System.....mmmmmmmmm..

Thanks for stopping by - hope to see you again - Steve
